The benefits admin work nobody wants to do is exactly what AI is good at

Every benefits team I've worked with has the same pile. The renewal spreadsheet rebuilt from scratch every year. The same fifteen enrollment questions answered over and over. The stewardship report that takes three days to assemble and gets skimmed in five minutes.

None of that work is hard. That's the frustrating part. It's just slow, repetitive, and relentless.

This is the exact shape of work that AI handles well. Not the judgment calls. Not the carrier negotiation. Not the conversation with an employee who just got a scary diagnosis. The pattern work underneath all of it.

A few examples from the last year of building tools for this:

Open enrollment questions. The top twenty questions are the same at almost every employer. A well-scoped assistant trained on your plan documents can answer them accurately, around the clock, and hand the genuinely complex ones to a human.

Stewardship reporting. Pulling claims data, formatting it, writing the narrative summary. The data still has to be right and a human still has to sign off, but the assembly is automatable.

Document lookups. "Is this covered?" "What's my deductible?" "When is the COBRA deadline?" These don't require a person. They require fast, accurate access to a document.

The point isn't to remove people from benefits. It's to stop spending their time on the work that never needed a person in the first place.

Start with one task. The one you dread most this quarter. That's usually the one worth automating first.
